Abilities
Having created a successful business partnership, I have participated in all aspects of the software development process, from sales, contract negotiation, project management and specification to analysis and design, development, testing, builds, configuration management, delivery, support and maintenance.
This experience has enabled me to keep a broad view of my project, yet still focus on the details required to produce high quality products that surpass expectations.
Through working at both small and large companies, from 5 people, to 35,000, I understand and can adapt to working autonomously or within a large team, in a wide range of roles.
I am a dedicated, hard working and flexible person, willing to go the extra mile to get things completed, to a very high standard.
In my spare time, I have recently been teaching myself C#, and improving my VB.NET skills by developing various applications and a personal website. Recently, I have begun participating in a community development effort in C# through SourceForge. I also keep up to date with industry best practices by reading weblogs from leaders in the field.
Employment History
Company Australian Grand Prix Corporation
Duration July 2004 (2 weeks)
Role Analyst Programmer
Languages ASP.NET, VB.NET
Summary Assisted with the design and development of the Australian Grand Prix Credentials website. I assisted in rescuing the project from cost and time overruns, and over the two weeks, brought large sections of the website up to release stage.
This contract was only for two weeks, due to my move to England.
Company Infosys
Australia (formally Expert Information Systems)
http://www.infosys.com.au
Duration February 2002 – July 2004
Roles Analyst Programmer
Configuration Management Engineer
Languages/Tools VB6, VB.NET, ASP.NET, COM, COM+, XML, MSMQ, VBScript, HTML, VBA, SQL Server, InstallShield, SourceSafe, Active Directory, MSMQ, RUP, SQL Profiling Tools
Summary I participated in many different projects whilst working at Infosys Australia, all on the Telstra account. These were mainly based around the STS application, a web based CRM product used by 4,500 geographically dispersed sales consultants, handling over 50,000 calls per day. Based on the 3-tier windows DNA architecture and .NET, the system provides a single ‘whole of customer view’, based on approximately 20 different systems.
Most recently, in the Configuration Management (CM) team, I assisted in the management of source code, builds and releases, supporting a team of over 220. Along with general configuration management tasks, I was responsible for managing the source code repositories (in MS Visual SourceSafe), as well as maintaining and expanding automated tools, across a wide variety of technologies (including VB.NET, VB6, ASP.NET, VBScript, VSS and AD).
Another project was the specification, costing, analysis and design for the implementation of an outbound dialler system into the STS application. This involved liaising with stakeholders, as well as small prototypes (in VB6) to ensure feasibility.
Other projects included the implementation of ‘customer tips’, an up selling opportunity notification, based on marketing data, into the system. As one of the initial developers on this system, I assisted in design and development, using VB6.
At the start of 2004, I was sent to India for 10 weeks to setup the CM environment, and assist with the setup of the development environment as part of a major outsourcing project. This involved implementing ClearCase and the CM team processes, as well as teaching and training for offshore CM engineers and also for developers, at 3 separate offshore sites.
Company Redgum Technologies
Duration October 1997 – February 2002
Roles Senior
Software Engineer
Systems Administrator
Languages/Tools VB6, VB.NET, ASP.NET, COM, DCOM, XML, VBScript, JavaScript, Perl, HTML, VBA, Access, SQL Server, SourceSafe, Active Directory.
Summary Redgum Technologies was formed with 3 friends during University, as part of our “Industry Based Learning” component. The universities intention was for us to gain experience by working in the industry, however we believed that we would gain broader and better experience if we created and managed our own company.
Through this, I gained wide ranging experience including contract negotiation, requirements gathering, development, testing and support. This was gained over multiple internal projects and also multiple medium to large scale custom systems for various clients. I also supported the network and servers and performed Systems Administration duties, including installation and support of Windows NT, 2000 & 2003, Exchange 2000 and 2003.
The internal projects included build systems, accounting reports, intranet applications and add-ins for Visual Basic to increase developer productivity. These were usually built in Visual Basic and SQL Server, using SourceSafe for source code control.
External projects included developing a Manufacturing Resource Planning system for Virtue Sheet Metal, over three years. This system handled all aspects of the company operations excluding finance, and linked to Microsoft Project for production scheduling. In this project, I performed most functions, from client liaison to development and support. When required, other developers were brought in to assist.
Another external project was a complete 3-tier insurance system for Reward Insurance, as a replacement for their non-Y2K compliant system. In this project, I assisted with design and development.
For CallSys Australia, we developed a client-server call centre monitoring system, which won the ATUG Best Communications Award in 2002. For this system, I assisted with client liaison, design, development and support of this product, which was implemented in BP Australia’s call centre (among others).
I believe that my experience with Redgum Technologies gives me an advantage over others with my length of time in the industry. I have not been “stuck in a rut”, focusing on only one part of the development life-cycle, but have learnt to see the project as a whole. This has enabled me to become a superior software engineer, as I can see how changes affect other parts of the project.
